I social sono stati importantissimi in questi anni per creare sinergie, far conoscere il proprio lavoro in giro per il mondo, far nascere link e progetti fra persone in realtà molto lontane. E lo dico per esperienza personale quotidiana, un esempio di questo è la mia amicizia con Gerardo Larrea, illustratore di moda che vive e lavora a Lima, che ho conosciuto su instagram per poi iniziare a parlarci e finire per collaborare con la rivista da lui creata insieme al socio Antonio Choy Kay, SKIN Magazine. Lo stile di Larrea è decisamente pop, deliziosamente accattivante, sospeso fra rimandi retrò e una attenzione precisa e dettagliata al contemporaneo di stile. Si respira una precisa passione per la moda, che conquista subito, un amore per colori e forme, la passione e anche un certo divertissement. Io adoro a tal punto il lavoro di Larrea che sono anche il fiero possessore di alcuni degli oggetti da lui creati ed immessi sul mercato, con le sue donne vestite Versace o Vuitton. Con questa intervista vi faccio conoscere meglio il creativo peruviano, certo che ve ne innamorerete anche voi!
Social media have been very important in recent years to create synergies, to make your work known around the world, to create links and projects between people who are actually very distant. And I say this from a very personal daily experience, an example of this is my friendship with Gerardo Larrea, a fashion illustrator who lives and works in Lima, whom I met on instagram and with whom I started talking and ended up collaborating with the magazine he created, together with partner Antonio Choy Kay, SKIN Magazine. Larrea’s style is decidedly pop, delightfully captivating, suspended between retro references and a precise and detailed attention to contemporary style. There is a clear passion for fashion, which immediately conquers, a love for colors and shapes, passion and also a certain divertissement. I adore Larrea’s work so much that I am also the proud owner of some of the objects he created and placed on the market, with his women dressed in Versace or Vuitton. With this interview I will introduce you to the Peruvian creative, sure you will fall in love with him too!

Quando hai iniziato a lavorare come illustratore?
Ho incominciato a lavorare nel 2000, mi è sempre piaciuta l’illustrazione e durante quel periodo ho realizzato alcune immagini commerciali ed editoriali, erano basate sullo stile che ho ora ma nel 2011 ho iniziato con l’illustrazione di moda e dalla prima che ho disegnato non mi sono più fermato, perché ho capito che è quello che mi appassiona veramente.
When did you began working as an illustrator?
I started working as an illustrator in 2000, I always liked illustration and in 2000 I did some commercial and editorial illustrations, they were based on the style I have now but in 2011 I just started with fashion illustration and from the first fashion illustration, I have not stopped, is what I’m passionate about.

Quali erano le tue ispirazioni, i tuoi eroi della moda all’inizio?
La mia ispirazione viene regolarmente dalla moda e dall’arte, ammiro molti artisti e illustratori, Ad esempio amo Modigliani, Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse, Egon Schiele e Caravaggio, così come adoro fotografi come Irving Penn, Helmut Newton e Richard Avedon. Mentre i miei eroi della moda nel mondo dell’illustrazione sono Antonio Lopez, Joe Eula, Tony Viramontes e i peruviani Reynaldo Luza e Alberto Vargas.
Which were you inspirations, your fashion heroes at the beginning?
My inspiration comes from fashion and art regurlarly, I admire many artists and illustrators, as artists I love Modigliani, Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse, Egon Schiele and Caravaggio as photographers Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon and my fashion heroes in illustrations are Antonio Lopez, Joe Eula, Tony Viramontes and peruvians Reynaldo Luza and Alberto Vargas.

Mi racconti un po’ più di te? Fai davvero un sacco di cose!
Sì, cerco sempre di fare tante cose, divido il mio lavoro in due parti, come illustratore di moda e l’altra come fashion editor e stylist, per la quale collaboro con il mio compagno di lavoro Antonio Choy Kay. Come fashion illustrator, disegno ogni stagione le collezioni che mi piacciono di più, collaboro anche con diversi marchi in diversi progetti, laboratori di illustrazione e ho lanciato i miei prodotti, come calendari, sottobicchieri, tazze, e così via. Come fashion editor e stylist, ho una mia rivista con il mio partner Antonio: SKINMagazine, esce due volte l’anno e si concentra su moda e lifestyle, facciamo anche editoriali di moda per diverse riviste e campagne di moda per marchi locali. Insegniamo anche corsi di styling in diversi istituti e viaggiamo alle settimane della moda, principalmente da Milano e Parigi.
Tell me what you do, because you do a lot of things!
Yes, I always try to do many things, I divide my work in two parts, as a fashion illustrator and the other as fashion editor and stylist, which I work with my work partner Antonio Choy Kay. With the illustration, I illustrate each season the collections that I like the most, I also collaborate with different brands in differents projects, illustration workshops and have launched my own products, such as calendars, coasters, mugs, etc.
As a fashion editor and stylist, I have my own magazine with my partner Antonio: SKINMagazine, it comes out twice a year and is focused on fashion and lifestyle, we also do fashion editorials for different magazines and fashion campaigns for local brands. We also teach styling classes at different institutes and travel to fashion weeks, mostly from Milan and Paris.

Suggerimenti per chi inizia ora questo mestiere?
Lavora duro, le cose non accadono dall’oggi al domani e più conosci il tuo stile di illustrazione tutto andrà meglio, ma devi sempre lavorare e fare pratica. SEMPRE!
Suggestions for beginners?
Work hard, things do not happen overnight and the more you know your illustration style everything will be better, but you have to always illustrate and practice. ALWAYS!

La tua idea di bellezza?
La bellezza per me è qualcosa che posso ammirare, non sotto i parametri stabiliti della bellezza convenzionale e penso che sia la cosa interessante: puoi trovarla ovunque e in qualsiasi modo.
Your idea of beauty?
Beauty for me is something I can admire, not under the established parameters of conventional beauty and I think that is the interesting thing about beauty, you can find it anywhere and in any way.

Cosa è cambiato a causa di questo periodo terribile e come cambierà il tuo lavoro in futuro?
È stata un’esperienza molto forte e ha decisamente cambiato il mondo. Ho lavorato in passato quasi sempre da casa, ma andavo alle riunioni o per scegliere abiti e servizi fotografici, ora lavoro sempre e solo da casa, penso che questo sarà il futuro, lavorare di più da casa e per ora tutto sarà virtuale. Sono stato in realtà anche molto attivo, illustrando e realizzando progetti, collegamenti instagram e cercando di andare avanti.
What has changed due to this terrible period and how it will change your work in the future?
It has been a very strong experience and has definitely changed the world. I almost always worked from home but I went to meetings or to choose clothes and photo shootings, now I work everything from home, I think that will be the future, to work more from home and for now everything will be virtual. I have also been active, illustrating and making projects, connections and trying to get ahead.

Sogni e progetti per il tuo futuro?
Ho diverse collaborazioni che stanno per uscire con marchi diversi e ne sono molto entusiasta, inoltre lancerò in questi mesi diversi prodotti su cui ho lavorato in questo periodo, il primo sarà una collezione di 4 sottobicchieri pieni di tanto colore. Per il futuro, mi piacerebbe prima o poi fare un libro e fare anche una mostra personale, mi piace molto l’idea, spero che un giorno sarà possibile.
Dreams and projects for your future?
I have several collaborations that are about to come out with different brands and I am very excited about it, in addition I will launch in these months several products that I have been working on in this period, the first will be a collection of 4 coasters full of a lot of color. For the future, I would like at some point to make a book and also have a personal exhibition, I really like that idea, I hope someday it will be possible.
